Downtown San Diego

Downtown San Diego is the vibrant hub of the city of San Diego. The area has everything you can expect from the urban center of a big city, from a multitude of shops and offices to exciting night spots and restaurants. Downtown San Diego boasts an appeal that’s all its own, though, seamlessly interweaving unique historical and cultural attractions with the most contemporary destinations.

Living in Downtown San Diego

Downtown San Diego features mid to high rise buildings housing the offices of top corporations, as well as condos and apartments. Standing alongside chrome and glass skyscrapers are a number of historic buildings, many of which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These include the Balboa Theatre, the El Cortez Condominiums, the Spreckels Theatre, the Walker Scott Building, and more.  The area is divided into several districts and neighborhoods, each with a distinct vibe and unique attractions. Arguably the most popular is Gaslamp Quarter, a historic district where you’ll find bars and restaurants housed in turn of the 20th century buildings, some of which might have served as saloons and brothels in the distant past.  Downtown also hosts Balboa Park and the San Diego Zoo, two highly popular California attractions. With 17 museums, acres of gardens, prestigious performing arts venues, and other attractions, Balboa Park has earned the distinction of being the Cultural Heart of San Diego. The Embarcadero district, which has a long maritime history, is now the home of the USS Midway, the legendary aircraft carrier that has been retired and converted into a museum. The district also hosts The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park, the home of the San Diego Symphony.  Sports lovers will enjoy watching a game of the MLB’s San Diego Padres at Petco Park, a sprawling baseball arena that also hosts concerts and other sporting events.
