Some say the community’s name comes from the Kumeyaay term for “greens used for food”, while others say it means “sweet water”. Within the Jamul area is the Jamul Indian Village, a designated sovereign land where members of the Tipai Band of Kumeyaay Indians live. The tribe was behind the development of Jamul Casino in the Indian Village, which welcomed its first guests in 2016. Today, Jamul Casino is the top landmark and entertainment destination in Jamul. In addition to around 1,700 slot machines and numerous table games, the casino also houses restaurants, lounges, bars, and a dance floor with live music performances.  While the casino offers contemporary entertainment, most of Jamul remains largely residential. The sparsely populated area is surrounded by rural land and the vast San Diego National Wildlife Refuge. Hills, valleys, and mountains create a scenic backdrop for homes in the neighborhood, giving it the much desired atmosphere of tranquility and isolation. In and around Jamul are shopping centers, restaurants, and parks, which provide convenience and walkable leisure options. The area is served by several highly rated schools, including Greater San Diego Academy, Jamul Primary School, and Grossmont Middle College High School.
