National City

National City is located at the southwestern portion of San Diego County, close to the US – Mexico border. The second oldest city in the county, National City boasts a highly diverse population and a vibrant lifestyle with an eclectic mix of attractions and activities.

National City’s fantastic location gives residents easy access to the rest of the region. The city is surrounded by major thoroughfares, including I-5 and I-805, as well as Highway 54 and Highway 15. It fronts San Diego Bay and is just minutes from both Mexico and Downtown San Diego. The city’s diverse population is reflected in the architectural styles found here. There are plenty of Spanish inspired architecture, but you will also see ranch, contemporary, and other styles. The city also boasts a number of historical homes and buildings, including four that are listed in the National Register of Historic Places.  The diversity also extends to the food. There’s an excellent selection of Mexican, Filipino, Japanese, American, and other cuisines in the 200+ restaurants found throughout the city.  For outdoor recreation, you can play golf at the nine-hole National City Golf Course, or cool off at the Las Palmas Community Pool. The city has six recreation centers offering workshops and classes in various activities, including dance, arts, sports, and more. The marina at San Diego Bay offers fishing and boating opportunities, and is a great place for waterfront strolling. Shopping is also a popular pastime in National City. Several shopping centers can be found here, including South Bay Plaza, San Diego’s first regional shopping center.  And for an experience that’s uniquely National City, have a bite of a San Diego Pretzel Company pretzel. The company was founded and grew here at National City and has achieved iconic status among the locals.
