Tierrasanta and Serra Mesa have many things in common, and one of these is their ties to military families. Tierrasanta formerly hosted the Camp Elliot Marine Corps training facility, and when the camp was closed, military families continued to make the neighborhood their home. Serra Mesa is also the community of choice for many military personnel and their families, as well as those who work for San Diego-based defense contractors like NASSCO and General Atomics. Home values in both neighborhoods have been rising as the demand for homes here continues to rise, making them ideal locations for a real estate investment. The two communities are also highly family friendly. The area is home to nine public schools under the Serra cluster of the San Diego Unified School District. There are also quite a few private schools serving both communities. The surrounding nature preserves and abundance of parks provide wide open spaces and a wide range of outdoor activities. Tierrasanta is a gateway to the Mission Trails Regional Park, while the Ruffin Canyon Open Space Preserve is found within the boundaries of Serra Mesa.  Three hospitals can be found nearby – Rady Children’s Hospital, Sharp Mary Birch Hospital, and Sharp Memorial Hospital.
